Bar Hendrik is named after the famous Dutch architect Hendrik Petrus Berlage. With his recognizable architectural style, he left an indelible mark on Amsterdam. As an urban planner, he was involved in the urban expansion of Amsterdam-Zuid, the place where Bar Hendrik is located. More than just an architect, Berlage was also an urban planner, furniture designer, glass designer and draughtsman. Everything he undertook revolved around the balance between efficiency and beauty. The execution of his designs came about through collaborations. He therefore strove to create a "total work of art.
